We chat to Leila Navabi about all things Edinburgh Fringe as they prepare to take their show Leila Navabi: Composition up North!
Hey Leila, here’s your chance to give an elevator pitch, can you give us a brief synopsis of your show?
Leila Navabi: Composition is an audacious punk musical comedy hour about the monopolisation of minority identity for social gain!
What attracted or inspired you to create this show?
I tend to write a lot of songs, like maybe one a week, just for therapeutic reasons and they suddenly all started to become at least a tiny bit linked to what has now become the theme of the show. Some ridiculous life stories I have also slotted in nicely and now there’s a show!
Have you performed at the fringe before? If it’s your first time, what are you most excited for?
I’ve not performed at the fringe before, I’m a debutante, babeh! I’m excited to eat as many potato scones as physics will allow. They are the Crown Jewels of Scotland (official).
What are the main themes within the show, and what can audiences expect?
It’s gay, it’s brown, it’ll turn your frown upside down.
Finally, with so many shows at the Edinburgh Fringe why should people book a ticket to this one?
Coz it’s like a Camden rock gig in 2009 and other vibes just can’t compare.

Spine-tingling yet heart-warming, Mark Gatiss’s retelling of A Christmas Carol truly encapsulates the haunting atmosphere of a Victorian ghost story, balanced out with enough humour so as to capture the festive season. Led by Keith Allen as Scrooge, with Peter Forbes as Marley, this show is perfect for Christmas viewing. The set design by Paul Wills is instantly captivating, … More A CHRISTMAS CAROL – REVIEW – ALEXANDRA PALACE
The title of this winner of Theatre 503’s 2023 International Playwriting Award by Roxy Cook may seem like the set-up to a joke, but the narrative that unspools is instead an affectionate, gently barbed and at base quite sobering portrait of three ordinary souls (and one restless feline) adrift in modern Moscow. There is much … More A WOMAN WALKS INTO A BANK – REVIEW – THEATRE503
Peter Pan Goes Wrong first premiered in London at the Pleasance Theatre in 2013, and earlier this year the show made its Broadway debut. Barrie’s Peter Pan is staged by … More PETER PAN GOES WRONG – REVIEW – LYRIC THEATRE
Drawing heavily from the classic canon of the British supernatural, HighTide’s trio of contemporary Gothic narratives uses traditional storytelling formats to address contemporary themes. Directed by Elayce Ismail, reverent musical interludes accompany tales of apparitions and nighttime conjurings that speak of women from the East of England. Unfortunately, the effect is less chilling and more … More GHOST STORIES BY CANDLELIGHT – REVIEW – SAM WANAMAKER PLAYHOUSE
