As part of Camden Fringe, Dreamworld made its way down to Camden People’s Theatre. Written and performed by Amelia Gann, the debut comedy play follows Cathy, a fitness instructor, and their dreams of being centre stage! We are taken on this fun-filled dance journey as Cathy reflects on memories from childhood, their queer awakening, and Zumba! We meet an array of humorous and relatable characters along the way during this one’ act drama led by Cathy.
Dressed in full workout attire, from the Lycra to the bright blue legwarmers, I admired Gann’s ability to maintain high energy throughout. The soundtrack is a mix of nostalgic pop hits and notable Zumba tracks. I loved the exaggerated dances routines and how Gann effortlessly transformed into the various characters; it was enjoyable to watch. From village residents like ‘Acrobatic Angela’ to the beloved Beryl, Gann successfully managed to create distinct personalities that had the audience laughing out loud.
Cathy’s character displayed an overwhelming sense of entitlement, impatience, and inability to tolerate the Zumba Gold class. Despite this, I could not help but sympathise with her. I wished there were more flashback scenes of the childhood memories, as well as further exploration of Cathy discovering her sexuality. Nonetheless, I still loved the show.
Dreamworld is entertaining, with constant humour from start to finish! Gann would deliver sarcastic lines while simultaneously showing off eccentric dance moves. The script is incredibly witty, engaging, and was performed with impeccable comedic timing. If you want to experience this fever dream of pop tunes, Zumba moves, and the suburban village life, you can catch Dreamworld at Camden People’s Theatre until the 14th of August!

Spine-tingling yet heart-warming, Mark Gatiss’s retelling of A Christmas Carol truly encapsulates the haunting atmosphere of a Victorian ghost story, balanced out with enough humour so as to capture the festive season. Costumes and sets are all made at the Lyric itself by Good Teeth, with set pieces being reused year on year. This year Cinderella gets the Hammersmith makeover, with some success.
