REVIEW – I WISH MY LIFE WERE LIKE A MUSICAL – EDINBURGH FRINGE

I’ve often wished that my life were like a musical, and it seems I’m not the only one.

I Wish My Life Were Like A Musical had a sold out run at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2019, and now it’s back and better than ever.

Created by Alexander S. Bermange, the show follows four actors waiting for auditions. Luke Harley, Hannah Taylor, Harry Winchester and Alice Ellen Wright are all no strangers to West End stages themselves, but I’m sure like most in the industry have also experienced the hardships of trying to establish themselves in the theatre industry.

Through exceptional musical numbers with choreography by Joanna Goodwin, we’re taken on a journey of vocal warmups, audience reactions to understudies performing and everyone at the audition also performing the song you’ve prepared.

Bermange’s lyrics and script are hilarious. There’s even a gag about that recent infamous firing of a cast on social media…

All four members of this cast are exceptionally talented. Taylor’s voice in particular is incredibly powerful, with musical numbers highlighting her range and how she can manipulate her instrument. One thing is for sure, it must be very difficult for her to pretend she can’t sing!

The musical numbers are wonderfully varied, with ballads to up-beat catchy numbers that will have you clapping along. Expect beautiful harmonies, hilarity and nods to other musicals – Elphaba’s ending note of Defying Gravity even makes an appearance.

I love a new musical, and I Wish My Life Were Like A Musical has left me very excited. This was one of the most polished shows that I saw at the Fringe, and I can see this being a hit. Anyone that works in the industry will adore this and probably relate to a lot of it. But there is also something for everyone to enjoy. In short, this is a sensation, and I can’t wait to see what’s next for the show.

    Drawing heavily from the classic canon of the British supernatural, HighTide’s trio of contemporary Gothic narratives uses traditional storytelling formats to address contemporary themes.
