REVIEW – POST SEX SPAGBOL – VAULT FESTIVAL


Post Sex Spagbol is a hilarious, honest, and unfiltered exploration of womanhood.

When Krissy begins a new job as a counsellor and sex-ed teacher at an all-girls boarding school, she deliberately offers questionable advice. As Krissy shares a myriad of sex myths with her innocent Year 8 pupils, we learn her absurd teaching is a result of her own struggles: feuding with her mum, heartache from an ex, and battling with her own self-discovery. The advice is both terrible and hilarious (suggesting mint shower gel on private parts!), and Krissy fails to acknowledge the potential consequences of her advice.

Written by Katie Bignell, the play delves into the experiences young women face, particularly the journey from girlhood to womanhood. The script is fast-paced, full of wit, and cleverly engages the audience for its entirety.

Katie Bignell, Georgia Livingstone, and Signe Ebb each play the role of Krissy and portray various characters in Krissy’s life. Under Caitlin Smith’s direction, the transitions between characters are seamless, and the trio gives entertaining performances with constant laugh-out-loud moments. I was so impressed with their comedic timing. From unsatisfying hook-ups to vagina libraries to seducing an ex at a funeral, Post Sex Spagbol doesn’t hold back as it offers these chaotically funny scenarios. 

In a powerful ending monologue performed by the trio, we are reminded of the societal pressures on women as well as the endless, and often contradictory, expectations placed on women. Krissy may be flawed, but the character is incredibly relatable – a young woman trying to be perfect in a world that’s imperfect. Amongst the humour, Post Sex Spagbol highlights this important message which left me feeling empowered!

    Drawing heavily from the classic canon of the British supernatural, High Tide’s trio of contemporary Gothic narratives uses traditional storytelling formats to address contemporary themes. Directed by Elayce Ismail, reverent musical interludes accompany tales of apparitions and nighttime conjurings that speak of women from the East of England. Unfortunately, the effect is less chilling and more lightweight, with conventional structures, predictable plot twists and an over-reliance on external forces to drive narrative shoring up some of the less relatable aspects of the genre.     Drum roll please…(Cue a literal drum rolling across the stage.) The Lyric pantomime is one of traditions with the return of many well-loved jokes and skits. Costumes and sets are all made at the Lyric itself by Good Teeth, with set pieces being reused year on year. This year Cinderella gets the Hammersmith makeover, with some success. The costuming is fun and vibrant, with the ugly stepsisters’ equine pyjamas and hoop-skirted ball gowns giving all the wrong kinds of extra you need for those characters.
