INTERVIEW – KATY OWEN FROM BLUE BEARD

Ellie chats to Katy Owen, currently starring in Wise Children’s new co-production of Blue Beard.

Firstly, without spoiling anything, can you tell us a little about the show Blue Beard?

It’s essentially a show about male violence. It takes a 15th century folk tale and a modern day tale, told by the sisters of the convent of the Fearful Fucked and Furious. It’s a sad, mad and hopeful anthem for our times.

Can you tell us about your character?

My character is the Mother Superior of the convent. I can’t give too much away but she’s a ferocious comedy and tragedy all wrapped up in a bright blue beard.

You have worked with Wise Children before, what do you enjoy most about working with this company?

I love working for Wise Children because their entire approach to work and company life is open and transparent. The work is collaborative and we all get to see the inner workings of the company and appreciate individuals roles.

Which venue are you most looking forward to visit in this run?

I’m excited to get back to Edinburgh. I love that city, it’s beautiful and full of ornate little drinking taverns. The audiences also tend to be vocal and up for it.

How have you found working with this cast?

This cast is an easy dream. We all work hard and are committed and proud of the show. We also enjoy a modest ale or two. There’s  a naughty fun between us, which translates on stage I think.

Which audiences do you think this show would connect to the most?

Having performed the show a fair few times now, it’s surprising how broad its effect is felt. It seems to have a deep emotional response from teenage girls right through to elderly gents. If you’ve ever felt fearful, fucked or furious…it will hit you.

You’ve been in a plethora of past productions – do you have any funny or memorable onstage mishaps you could share with us?

In the show Wise Children, I was playing a Grandma in a naked fat suit. I went for an emergency wee in between scenes and got locked in the disabled toilet. I was screaming and pounding the door, listening to the show relay, knowing I was due on in seconds. I made it but not zipped up and after a very long panicked pause.

Do you have any advice for young people wanting to start a career in the theatre industry?

It’s the best job in the world but for most of us, a rough old ride. You will be poor, disappointed and lonely. If you think you can be happy doing something else – do that!

And finally, why should audiences buy tickets to Blue Beard?

You’ll experience a rollercoaster of emotions and still be home in time for an episode of Columbo.

Blue Beard, written and directed by Emma Rice, is currently embarking on a UK tour until May 18th – Find out more here!
