I hate chick flicks – although my guilty pleasure is Bridget Jones’ Diary and that’s one of the most problematic (could be new material if they decide to up the show to Seven Chick Flicks). The issue is the writing of female characters, of female rage, of female pleasure – most of these movies are written by men, and women appear as damsels in distress, people that need saving, and one-dimensional. Well, Kerry Ipema and KK Apple bring us all the best moments from six of these movies, but call out the icky, unrealistic bits in what is an exceptional, fast-paced comedy show.
Six Chick Flicks…Or a Legally Blonde Pretty Woman Dirty Danced on the Beaches While Writing a Notebook on the Titanic is written by Ipema and TJ Dawe, and it begins with Titanic, introducing the ‘Rose Effect’ to the audience. This is when Rose only sees her beauty through men, and it arises up not just in this movie but throughout the show, in multiple films – it provides the perfect callback throughout. They ask the audience if any women in the room also orgasmed the first time they had sex, and they poke fun at the infamous door.
Next up is Pretty Woman in which they speak about how this is a completely accurate depiction of sex work in LA. There is then Beaches, then Legally Blonde with an exceptionally good Jennifer Coolidge impressions from Apple, The Notebook, and finally Dirty Dancing. And yes they do perform the final number entirely, lift and all.
Throughout the show, songs from the different movies are incorporated, with lyrics changed to fit the satire they have created. Their choreography is slick and tight, and there are nods to other movies, current societal issues, and different chick flicks throughout.
Six Chick Flicks is some of the smartest and best comedy writing I’ve seen. Satirical and fun, the show is polished to perfection, and Apple and Ipema perform in perfect harmony – always knowing the next move. It’s sharp, it’s smart, and it’s such a fun hour. I hope this show has a future life and they’re able to expand it to include more films; I’d also love to see the show on a bigger stage with more props, costumes, and set. This show is exactly what the fringe is all about – and you’re guaranteed to have the time of your life! I could watch this on repeat.

Spine-tingling yet heart-warming, Mark Gatiss’s retelling of A Christmas Carol truly encapsulates the haunting atmosphere of a Victorian ghost story, balanced out with enough humour so as to capture the festive season. Drawing heavily from the classic canon of the British supernatural, HighTide’s trio of contemporary Gothic narratives uses traditional storytelling formats to address contemporary themes.
