LORNA ROSE TREEN: SKIN PIGEON - REVIEW

Lorna Rose Treen: Skin Pigeon is like one big intrusive thought, and I loved every moment of it.

Earlier this year Treen won Chortle’s Best Newcomer Award, and she has already sold out her entire Edinburgh Fringe run! Having amassed 2 million likes on social media with her character comedy sketch videos, Skin Pigeon is a much anticipated Edinburgh debut.

When entering the space we are greeted by a sort of volcano of clothing, Treen pops up, dressed as a Brownie (the girl guide not the sweet treat), and the show begins.

In this hour of character comedy sketches, Treen is everything from an older lady that repeats, the author Sally Rooney, a PE Teacher, a dolphin, and a cowgirl with guns for hands – amongst others. Some sketches are better than others, and the show could be fine-tuned to ensure laughs are equal across the entire hour, but it remains a polished and successful show.

There are moments of pure brilliance, the harsh banter of a PE teacher who believes they are hilarious is intensely relatable – my own PE teacher made the same joke about the height of a particular pupil every single lesson. Making an audience member sprinkle water over her whilst she re-enacts the Four Weddings and a Funeral ‘Is It Still Raining?’ scene is hysterical. Skin Pigeon is so random you can never predict what will happen next.

This hour reminds me of the outlandish adventures we dreamt up as children, the hours spent playing out complex imaginary storylines with friends. It’s nostalgic, it’s ridiculous, and it’s hilarious. An incredibly strong fringe debut, Treen performs with unwavering energy throughout despite how incredibly warm The Attic is and how physical her act becomes. This is a masterclass in character and sketch comedy – Treen is one to watch.

On Me is a play by Caroline Lamb of Dangerous To Know Theatre Company. It is presented at the Waterside Arts Centre in Sale before touring to Bolton Library, after its award-winning run at the Greater Manchester Fringe Festival in 2022. SWEAT – REVIEW – ROYAL EXCHANGE THEATRE

After being commissioned by the Oregon Shakespeare Festival to write a play about the American Revolution, Lynn Nottage wrote SWEAT eerily close to the announcement of Donald Trump’s presidential candidacy. It is revived in Manchester by director Jade Lewis for the Royal Exchange Theatre.
